加州作为西海岸教育资源最丰富的州,拥有32所公立大学和23所私立大学,私立大学以斯坦福,加州理工,南加大为首,而公立大学以加州福尼亚大学(University of California,简称UC)为首,UC也是美国最具影响力的公立大学系统之一。
加州大学拥有10个校区,加州大学的伯克利校区(UC Berkeley)、洛杉矶校区(UCLA)、圣巴巴拉校区(UC Santa Barbara)、戴维斯校区(UC Davis)、欧文校区(UC Irvine)、圣克鲁兹校区(UC Santa Cruz)、圣地亚哥校区(UC San Diego)、河滨校区(UC Riverside)和旧金山校区(UC San Francisco),都是世界一流的学府。其中排名美国前50的6个校区(UC Berkeley,UCLA,UC San Diego,UC Davis,UC Santa Barbara,UC Irvine),旧金山校区是医学院,医学排名前五。
各分校专业优势分析
很多人认为:Berkeley是UC各分校中最有声望的学校,也是整体教学水平最强的学校。
如果根据各分校教职工里获得诺贝尔奖、菲尔兹奖、图灵奖的人数,以及美国国家科学院、工程学院的人数这个指标来看,各分校(除了UCSF)的排名如下:
UCB>UCLA>UCSD>UCSB>UCI>UCSC,UCD>UCR>UCM
要提醒大家的是:这个排名并非经过专业统计后的结果,尤其是排名在后半段的几所分校差别并不明显。
以下是各分校的专业优势分析:
【海洋生物学】专业,只在UCLA、UCSD、UCSC开设。
【农业】类专业,只在UCD、UCR开设。
【犯罪学】专业,只在UCI开设。
UCSD,UCD,UCLA、UCI有自己的【医学院】。
UCB,UCLA,UCD,UCI有自己的【法学院】。
UCB的【自然科学】、【数学】和【工程】是UC最强的,其中【工程】类专业稳居全美top3,另外两个学校是MIT和斯坦福。
UCB在【生命科学】领域相对比较弱,因为UCB并没有自己的医学院。
UCLA和UCSD在【生命科学】领域实力比较强,两所分校都拥有自己的医学院,校医院,在生命科学领域有全面而深入的研究,并与工程学院进行密切的合作。
UCLA和UCB的【教育】专业都比较强,但UCLA更胜一筹。
UCLA在【艺术】领域是比较强的,然而加州各分校只有UCSD进入到艺术类排名Top20。UCLA的【电影电视制作】专业是非常强的,这与它地处好莱坞附近有很大关系。
【商学院】:UCB的哈斯商学院是美国top10的商学院,UCLA的Anderson商学院是美国Top15的商学院,两所分校的商学院是加州大学中前景最好的。
【法学院】:UCB的法学院是美国top10的法学院,UCLA的法学院是美国top20的法学院。
在【科学、数学、工程领域】:UCB、UCLA、UCSD、UCSB四所分校是加州系统中最强的,
UCSC的【天文】专业很厉害,【物理】专业也不错。
UCSB的【物理】相当不错,由于建立时间不长,UCSB的物理系比其他学校更“悠哉”一点。
UCSB的【化学工程】也很强。
UCD的【生态学】和【进化生物学】很强。
1.加州大学没有EA/ED这些提前批的录取,所有校区统一的申请提交截止日期为每年的11月30日12:00 PM(加州当地时间),录取结果将在次年的3月中下旬发放,学生需在5月1日之前答复学校是否接受录取,如果接受,则需缴纳100美金录取定金。
2.虽然加州大学的申请提交截止日期为11月30日,但学校能够接受的最晚的SAT考试时间是12月份。因此,学生可以报名参加12月份的SAT考试,并在考试成绩出来之后将新成绩补寄给学校。寄送SAT官方成绩时,不需要每个校区都寄送,只要你把成绩寄送申请的任意一个校区,其他校区都能收到。加州大学在评估时参考学生单次最高成绩而非拼分成绩。作为国际学生,加州大学要求必须在不晚于1月份(2月份之前)收到学生的语言成绩(托福/雅思),也就是说学生可以报考1月份第一周的托福考试,并及时将新成绩补寄给学校。因为托福成绩没有加急寄送服务,所以1月中下旬的托福考试成绩不能保证学校能在2月份之前收到。寄送托福/雅思官方成绩时,则需要每个校区都单独寄送。
3.虽然加州大学的申请已不再强制要求学生提交SAT2成绩,但有些学校的某些学院强烈建议提交SAT2成绩,例如申请UC Berkeley的化学学院和工程学院,以及UCLA的工程学院的同学们最好提交至少2门SAT2成绩:数学加一门理科科目(物理,化学或生物),具体哪一门根据自己的擅长和意向申请专业来抉择。
4.加州大学不需要推荐信,作品集,简历等补充材料,所以我们需要利用更有限的资源和空间来将自己的经历、抱负、特长、优势等全面的呈现给录取官员,这就要求我们必须thoughtfully & thoroughly地回答申请中的每一个问题。加州文书见附件。
5.学生在申请加州大学的过程中不需要寄送纸质材料,包括成绩单,存款证明,高中毕业证明等。但学生在填写申请表时,必须汇报与成绩单原件上一致的成绩。学生在录取并确定就读之后再将成绩单原件(9-12年级),以及高中毕业证明寄给学校录取办公室。存款证明是在学生录取确定就读并缴纳了录取定金后以及申请I-20表格时才需提供。
6.除了加州大学旧金山分校(研究生院)之外,加州大学9个校区都共用同一个申请系统。因此如果你同时申请几个加州大学的校区,你只需要提交一份申请就可以了,每个校区的申请费为80美金,每增加一个校区,增加80美金申请费。
7.想要去加州大学读商科,特别是金融和会计专业的同学们需要注意以下这些问题:
A.加州大学的部分校区并不提供给本科学生商科学位和专业,例如UCLA,UC San Diego,UC Davis,UC Santa Barbara,UC Santa Cruz这5所大学本科是没有商科专业可选。
B.即使提供商科学位和专业的校区,也不提供金融和会计这样的专业方向,比如UC Berkeley,其提供给学生的专业只有Business Administration,而且该BusinessAdministration专业只是针对大三转学学生,所以大一新生申请时只能选择文理学院下面的Undeclared—Pre-Business Administration。学生录取进校后需完成相关的先修课程要求及取得优异成绩后待大三申请转入商学院继续完成商科学位。同样还包括UC Irvine (商科专业:Business Administration,BusinessInformation Management),UC Riverside (商科专业:Business Administration,该专业下面有6个concentration:Accounting& Auditing; Finance; General Management; Information Systems; Marketing;Operations and Supply Chain Management )。
C.关于加州大学各个校区的专业设置,建议学生在选校之前一定要查询了解清楚,看看有意向的学校是否有提供自己感兴趣的专业。

Question 1:
Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you havepositively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to groupefforts over time.
Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just atitle. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge ofa specific task, or a taking lead role in organizing an event or project. Thinkabout your accomplishments and what you learned from the experience. What wereyour responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change yourperspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute atyour school, church in your community or an organization? And your leadershiprole doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example,do you help out or take care of your family?
Question 2:
Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in manyways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, toname a few. Describe how you express your creative side.
Things to consider: What does creativity mean to you? Do you have acreative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do withthat skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution?What are the steps you took to solve the problem? How does your creativityinfluence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativityrelate to your major or a future career?
Question 3:
What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have youdeveloped and demonstrated that talent over time?
Things to consider: If there’s a talent or skillthat you’re proud of, this is the time to share it. You don’tnecessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent(although if you did and you want to talk about, feel free to do so). Why is thistalent or skill meaningful to you? Does the talent come naturally or have youworked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allowyou opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how dothey fit into your schedule?
Question 4:
Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educationalopportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything thathas added value to your educational experience and better prepared you forcollege. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichmentprogram, or enrollment in an academy that’s geared toward an occupation or amajor, or taking advanced courses that interest you —just to name a few. If youchoose to write about educational barriers you’ve faced, how did you overcomeor strived to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did youcall on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shapewho are you today?
Question 5:
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the stepsyou have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected youracademic achievement?
Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something youhave faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant toyou? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced andwhat you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someoneelse or did you handle it alone? If you’re currently working your way through achallenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects ofyour life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at myschool, with my friends, or with my family?”
Question 6:
Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it hasinfluenced you.
Things to consider: Discuss how your interest in the subjectdeveloped and describe any experience you have had inside and outside theclassroom—such as volunteer work, summer programs,participation in studentorganizations and/or activities—and what you have gained from your involvement. Has your interestin the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or career? Have you beenable to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB,college or university work)?
Question 7:
What have you done to make your school or your community a betterplace?
Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompassa group, team or a place–like your high school,hometown, or home. You can define communityas you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Wasthere a problem that you wanted to fix in your community? Why were you inspiredto act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefitothers, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others toinitiate change in your community?
Question 8:
What is the one thing that you think sets you apart from othercandidates applying to the University of California?
Things to consider: Don’t be afraid to braga little. Even if you don’t think you’re unique, you are—remember, there’s only one of you in the world. From your point of view, what do youfeel makes you belong on one of UC’s campuses? Whenlooking at your life, what does a stranger need to understand in order to knowyou? What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent,challenge, or opportunity that you think will help us know you better? We’renot necessarily looking for what makes you unique compared to others, but whatmakes you, YOU.
